Testing Requirements
Saint Paul Teaching Fellows is looking for applicants who realize that one teacher's influence can change the possibilities for numerous students. Our participants will have the drive to go above and beyond all expectations for both themselves and their students. To ensure that Fellows enter their teaching careers as highly-qualified new educators, ready to earn their teaching license, Fellows must register for, study for, and pass the following exams before enrollment in the program can be finalized:
- Praxis I
- Praxis II Subject Assessment
- Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching
The Praxis I is a general knowledge exam including sections on reading, writing, and mathematics. All Fellows must take and pass all three sections of the Praxis I (reading, writing, and math) prior to summer Institute. The Praxis I is available in both computer-based and paper-based administrations. Registration is handled by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). We strongly encourage candidates to register as soon as possible for the next available computer-based test administration. (The computer-based version is available on a daily basis, while the paper-based version is only available on limited set test dates). Click here for more information about the Praxis I and click here to register for the Praxis I exam.
The Praxis II Subject Assessment is a subject area-specific exam. Candidates should review the program eligibility requirements, consider their eligibility when stating subject area preferences on the Fellows online application, and then wait for specific, individualized Praxis II directions from our program office before registering for this exam. The appropriate Praxis II Subject Assessment(s) will vary for each candidate, depending on a candidate’s eligibility and the subject he/she may teach in the fall. Candidates invited to interview with the Teaching Fellows program will receive individualized guidance on the appropriate Praxis II Subject Assessment(s) for their candidacy with their invitation to interview, and are urged to register at that time for their Praxis II Subject Assessment(s). The Praxis II Subject Assessment is offered in a paper-based test administration, and registration is handled by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Click here for more information about the Praxis II Subject Assessment and click here to register for the Praxis II Subject Assessment (exam dates listed below) once you have received instructions from the Teaching Fellows program office.
The Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching is a required exam focusing on pedagogical knowledge for specific grade levels (for example, grades K-6, 5-9, or 7-12). The appropriate Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching exam will vary for each candidate, depending on a candidate’s eligibility and the subject and grade level he/she may teach in the fall. Candidates invited to interview with the Teaching Fellows program will receive individualized guidance on the appropriate Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching exam for their candidacy with their invitation to interview, and are urged to register at that time for their Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching exam. The Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching is offered in a paper-based test administration, and registration is handled by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Praxis Preparation
It is imperative that all candidates STUDY thoroughly for the Praxis I, Praxis II Subject Assessment, and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching exams. These exams often prove difficult even for individuals with deep content knowledge or relevant professional experience. As you prepare, consider the following recommendations and resources:
- Visit www.ets.org for information. Select the Tests at a Glance feature for the Praxis I and Praxis II to access an overview of the material covered on the exams and download sample test problems.
- Consider purchasing ETS’ Praxis Study Guides. However, please note that many candidates report needing study materials beyond these ETS resources.
- Refer to college and high school textbooks focused on the appropriate subject matter for your Praxis II Subject Assessment. Review math textbooks in preparation for the math section of the Praxis I, as well.
- Consider purchasing study guides from major test prep providers at a local library or bookstore.
- Actively search the internet for additional test prep materials and resources.
- Form study groups with other candidates or teachers.
Note that it is common for candidates to need to take the Praxis II and/or sections of the Praxis I a second time due to failure on the first attempt. Therefore, the Fellows program strongly recommends that candidates register for the Praxis I now and that candidates invited to interview with the program register as soon as possible for the Praxis II Subject Assessment and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching upon receiving individualized direction on which Praxis II exams to take. This will allow candidates to maximize their chances to have time to re-take the exams if needed.
All Fellows must prove that they have passed the Praxis I, Praxis II Subject Assessment, and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching prior to the start of the Training Institute. Candidates who do not meet these testing requirements will not be permitted to continue on in the Teaching Fellows program. Please note that it takes approximately one month to receive scores.
The following table lists upcoming dates for paper-based test administrations for the Praxis II Subject Assessments and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching exams as well as their registration deadlines. (Note that the computer-based Praxis I is offered on a daily basis. Candidates should register for all three sections of the Praxis I as soon as possible.)
